What Would Don Draper Do?

May 3, 2013 Comments

If there's something Don Draper knows, is how to make you crave something. He will spend a couple of days not even thinking about the ad. Then one day, while simply smoking, perhaps even while sipping some scotch, something completely ordinary will trigger a thought, an idea, the secret for the perfect ad campaign.

He will then pitch it to you. Smooth words will come out of his mouth, in a even smoother voice. For a few minutes you'll give him your full attention; after it, you'll want whatever he's selling. You'll need it, even if you never did before. That's the power of advertising: it seduces us, and if it's done right, we surrender.

I could do that to you right now - I could come up a brilliant ad for what I'm selling, using smooth words in a way you've never heard before. But I'm not Don Draper: I don't smoke, I don't drink nearly as much as him, and I certainly don't work in advertising. So I won't:

It's coming. You'll like it.

Winona Ryder for Marc Jacobs

Winona Ryder was asked by Marc Jacobs to be a part of his 2003 Spring/Summer campaign after wearing one of his designs to court."I asked Winona to do the campaign because I thought she looked so beautiful in all these pictures that we've seen recently, regardless of whether they were from the trial".
